Darjeeling – the Queen of Hills

Location & Climate

Darjeeling is a beautiful hill station in North Bengal, and is being used especially as a summer retreat since the British era. The town and municipality of Darjeeling is headquarter to the namesake district. Located at an average altitude of 6,700 ft in the Darjeeling Himalayan hill region, the Darjeeling-Jalapahar range originates in the south from Ghum. The location of the town and surrounding area provides a temperate climate. Summer is the best enjoyed season here with pleasant atmosphere, while winter is very cold, and late summer is wet due to monsoon.

History

The name of Darjeeling is said to be derived from two Tibetan words ‘dorje’ and ‘ling’, meaning the ‘land of thunderbolt’. Darjeeling has a pivotal role in the Indian history. It is even deeply intertwined with the history of Sikkim, Nepal, Bhutan and British India. The wars of Chogyal, Gorkhas and British give the history of Darjeeling a many layered structure.

Flora & Fauna

Trees like oak, sal etc, large variety of rare orchids and temperate, semi-evergreen and alpine forest describe the flora of Darjeeling, as it is a part of the Eastern Himalayan zone. Many common and rare species of plants of this area are preserved and can be observed in the Lloyd’s Botanical Garden.

Fauna of Darjeeling and the surrounding places contains the animals like plovers, gulls, civet, mongoose, teals, ducks, badgers etc. The Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park is a centre for conservation and breeding programme of endangered animals of Himalayan region.

How to Reach

Darjeeling is easily accessible via road from anywhere around, although people mostly visit Darjeeling directly via Siliguri. You can also reach New Jalpaiguri Railway Station by train and take toy-train towards Darjeeling. The nearest airport to Darjeeling is Bagdogra Airport. After your flight lands here, you may take a cab or hire a car.
