Kurseong – the Place of Small Orchid

Location & Climate

Located at the foothills of Eastern Himalayas, the sub-divisional town of Kurseong is a popular town in Darjeeling district at the northern part of West Bengal. The average altitude of the town is 1458 m. The geographical location of the area is the reason that it receives basically mild temperate climate. Its chilling and dry weather during summer is the reason of tourists visiting the locations in summer in a large number.

History

Before even British rule in India, Kurseong was a part of the Kingdom of Sikkim. It is also the home of one of the oldest municipalities in West Bengal. While the district of Darjeeling was formed in 1890, Kurseong became a sub-division of that newly born district.

Flora

As Kurseong is situated in the lower altitude of Eastern Himalayan foothills and is a part of the Darjeeling hills, the flora falls in semi-evergreen, alpine and temperate forest. The very name of the town means ‘small orchid’, thus it indicates that various types of orchids represent the flora of the place.

How to Reach

Kurseong is superbly connected with the major towns around like Siliguri, Darjeeling, Mirik, Kalimpong etc by road. The nearest airport is at Bagdogra town which is about 40 km distant. The railway station in New Jalpaiguri at a distance of 45 km is the closest major centre for railway communication with the rest of the country.
