Lachung is a small tourist town in the North Sikkim of the Northeast Indian state Sikkim. It is located at the confluence of Lachung and Lachen rivers in the northeast part of the state near the Indo-Tibet border. Elevated at an altitude of 2900 m, Lachung has an average cold weather throughout the year. The winter is freezing cold with vast areas covered in snow, while the rest of the year receives average temperature of 10°C. The south-West monsoon occur heavy rain during July, August and September.
Entry to Lachung is only possible through guided-tour with registered travel agents, as the town is located close to the border with Tibet. Tourists need to get permit for Lachung trip from the capital city of the state, Gangtok, located about 125 km away. The nearest airport is at Bagdogra town that is 194 km distant. Nearest major railway stations are at New Jalpaiguri and Siliguri Junction, at distance of 192 km and 185 km respectively.
