One of the most visited developed villages in the Dooars region is Lataguri. Located just outside the Gorumara National Park in the district of Jalpaiguri in North Bengal, the village is widely known for being a tourist hub to experience and get permits for both Gorumara National Park and Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary. Lataguri is situated amongst the forest of Dooars and provides you excellent opportunity to absorb the beauty of this wild region from the core. The climate of Lataguri is basically hot and humid. The humidity goes high during summer and the monsoon is dense and heavy, while winter is quite comfortable. The average annual temperature ranges from 10 to 23 degree Celsius.
The only airport of North Bengal is the nearest one from Lataguri. The airport falls under 68 km from the village which takes around 1 hour and 45 minutes via Canal Road. New Jalpaiguri Railway Station is the closest major railway station at 50 km distance, although there is a small station in Lataguri itself. The city of Siliguri is 63 km distance from this village, while Jalpaiguri town is hardly 50 minutes drive away.
The town-like location of Lataguri provides almost everything to the tourists who are visiting Gorumara and Chapramari. There is also a small Nature Interpretation Centre that has some of the various species of animals which represent this region. Widely popular to watch Indian rhino, Royal Bengal Tiger, Indian bison and Asian elephants, this is basically a medium-sized park with grassland and forest. The park was declared as wildlife sanctuary in 1949, and it became a national park during 1994. The park falls under Indomalaya ecozone and contains rain trees, bamboo groves, tropical riverine reeds and terai grassland vegetation. As for the fauna, 50 species of mammals, 22 species of reptiles, 194 species of birds, 27 species of fish, 7 species of turtles etc are seen here.
Covering an area of 960 hectares, the wildlife reserve of Chapramari is blessed with water from three rivers – Teesta, Murti and Neora. Specifically famous for bird-watching, this sanctuary has variety in both avifauna and fauna. Animals like Indian bison, elephant, leopard, deer etc and birds like kingfisher, green pegion, parakeets etc are seen here.
Inside the Buxa National Park, there is a 760 sq km area that is widely known as a tiger reserve, although civet, elephant, Indian bison, red jungle fowl and Indian boar are also found here. It is basically situated in Alipurduar district, sharing an international border with Bhutan.
Locates around 30 km away from Alipurduar town, the fort of Buxa is a great attraction for tourists for its archaeological and historical significance. Its grand history lies with the protection of the Silk Route and contention between King of Bhutan and Cooch King. The sacred temple of Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is located nearby, where around 10 thousand devotees gather during Shiva Chaturdashi.
One of the best hilltop to watch the surrounding in Dooars and definitely the most outstanding viewpoint in Lataguri is Rovers Point. You can experience a sweeping view of the deep jungle and valley.
This is a small town-like location in Jalpaiguri district. Located in the bank of Murti River, it is widely popular for one-day trips, get-togethers and picnic. The splendid scenic beauty is the main attraction here.
Jayanti is a popular trekkers’ and hikers’ zone near Lataguri. Lying along the banks of Jayanti River, it forms a border with stunning hill of Sinchula. The trek-route from Buxaduar to Jayanti crosses the dense forest of BTR. Apart from village hiking, the ancient caves, known as Mahakal Caves, are also points of tourist attraction here.
