Along with the district headquarter at Mangan, the entire North Sikkim is the least populous district among all the four districts of Sikkim, although area wise it is the largest one. The landscape of North Sikkim is mountainous. The vegetation is dense with alpine forest, desert scrub and tundra. Most of the locations in this district are restricted because of international border with China nearby, and there are some tourist places in North Sikkim that are excellent spots of travellers’ attraction.
Gurudongmar Lake is popular for its astounding atmosphere and it is also one of the high altitude lakes in the world. An awe-inspiring beauty of the universe is fully bestowed upon this lake. Located about 5 km away from China border, the lake is elevated at an altitude of 5430 m.
The valley of Thangu is located at 13000 ft altitude and remains frozen most of the time of a year. The valley is filled with colours of various flowers when the snow melts during the month of May. Several travellers visit Thangu village to absorb its beauty.
Among all the travel destinations in North Sikkim, Lachen is one of the least visited ones. Those who like to spend some moments of solace can get attracted by its simplicity and freshness. Lots of trekking trips begin from this 8300 ft altitude village.
The mountain village of Lachung is elevated at 8600 ft height above sea level and is frequently visited by tourists for breathtaking scenario of snow clad mountain peaks, waterfalls and rivers, and apple orchards etc. There is a gumpa nearby named Lachung Gumpa.
Spreading over the Yumthang Valley beside the Yumthang River, Singhba Rhododendron Sanctuary is a point of tourist attraction when the trees are on full-bloom in the months of April and early May. The sight looks like a colour palette during that time of the year.
Chungthang is a small town, situated at the confluence of the Lachen River and the Lachung River. Legend says that Guru Padmasambhava blessed this place, thus considered as a holy land. Mineral water constantly flows from an opening in a rock where prints of his hand and foot are seen.
Chopta Valley is visited primarily because of Chandrashila, Tungnath Temple and other monuments of historical and religious importance. Adventure mongers love this spot as it is one of the least visited destinations among all the travel locations in North Sikkim.
Lakes are a specialty of North Sikkim. Crow Lake is one of the many lakes in this district. Surrounded by small mountains, the location is soul-freshening and a treat to the eyes. Tourists enjoy the frozen lake-water during winter.
Cholamu Lake in North Sikkim is the highest lake in India and the 14th highest one in the whole world. Elevated at an altitude of 18000 ft, the location is an eye-candy and the landscape is serene and peaceful. Except for monsoon or winter, Cholamu is visitable throughout the whole year.
